The question to answer during the next drop
When it happens, before you restart anything, try to open your router's admin page — usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in a browser. The exact address is printed on a sticker on the router.
- The router page loads. Your Wi-Fi link is fine. The connection to the outside world is what dropped. That's a line, modem, or provider problem — skip to the internet section.
- The router page doesn't load, and your device says it's not connected. The radio link between device and router is dropping. Go to the next section.
This single check saves people from spending a weekend changing Wi-Fi channels when their broadband line is the thing failing — or from arguing with their provider, who tests the line, finds it perfect, and closes the ticket.
A useful second data point: does a wired device drop at the same moment? If a computer on an Ethernet cable keeps working while Wi-Fi devices fall off, that's conclusively the wireless side. If everything drops together, it's the line or the router itself.
If the Wi-Fi link is dropping
Band steering flapping
Most routers broadcast 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under a single network name and try to move devices to whichever is better. When your device sits at the boundary where both look roughly equal, the router and the device can end up handing it back and forth — and each handover is a brief disconnection.
The signature: drops happen in one particular room, roughly regularly, and last only a few seconds. Working right next to the router is fine; so is being far away. It's the middle distance that breaks.
Fix: split the bands into two separate network names in your router settings (for example "Home" and "Home-5G") and connect the problem device to one deliberately. It's less tidy and far more stable.
Roaming between mesh nodes or extenders
Same problem, different cause. Devices are notoriously reluctant to let go of a node they've connected to, so a laptop carried across the house can cling to the far node until the signal is unusable, drop, then reconnect. If you have extenders with their own separate network names, this gets much worse, because there's no coordinated handover at all.
Fix: give mesh nodes the same network name and let the system handle roaming; if you're using cheap extenders with separate names, that's the root cause and a proper mesh system is the real answer. Also check the backhaul — a mesh node placed too far from the main router will drop everything connected to it whenever its own link stutters.
Power saving on the device's Wi-Fi adapter
This is a leading cause on Windows laptops specifically, and it's a two-minute fix:
- Device Manager → Network adapters → your Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Power Management → uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
- Then Settings → System → Power & battery, and make sure you're not in a battery-saver mode that throttles the radio when idle.
The signature here: it drops when the laptop has been sitting untouched for a while, and reconnects the moment you touch the trackpad.
Signal that's genuinely too weak
A connection at the edge of usable range doesn't degrade gracefully — it works, then abruptly doesn't. If drops correlate with where you are rather than when, this is it. Router placement is the highest-value fix and it's free: central, out in the open, raised off the floor, away from metal and water. Our Wi-Fi speed guide covers placement and coverage in detail.
Too many devices
Consumer routers have limits, and a modern home with phones, laptops, TVs, speakers, plugs, bulbs, and a doorbell can genuinely exceed what an older router handles well. The signature: it got worse over months as you added things, and it's worse in the evening when everyone's home. Rebooting helps for a day or two, then it returns — that pattern points strongly at the router running out of capacity.
The 5 GHz cause nobody mentions
Parts of the 5 GHz band are shared with weather and aviation radar. Routers using those channels are legally required to run DFS — dynamic frequency selection — which means: if the router thinks it detects radar, it must immediately vacate the channel. Devices get disconnected, and the router then stays off that channel for a period (often around 30 minutes) while it finds a new one.
The signature is distinctive: all 5 GHz devices drop at exactly the same instant, 2.4 GHz devices are unaffected, it takes a minute or more to come back, and it seems entirely random. If you live near an airport, a coastal radar station, or a weather facility, this is a strong candidate.
Fix: in your router's 5 GHz settings, set the channel manually to one of the non-DFS channels — typically the lower group starting at 36, or the upper group around 149 and above, depending on your country's regulations. Your router usually marks DFS channels, or refuses to let you pick them manually. Avoiding them entirely removes this failure mode.
If the internet is dropping
Your Wi-Fi is fine; the connection beyond the router is failing.
- Check the modem's lights during a drop. Most modems have a link or sync light. If it blinks or goes out when the connection fails, the line is losing sync — that's a provider issue and it's the evidence you need for the support call.
- Look at the physical line. A loose coax connector, a corroded phone socket, a kinked fibre patch cable behind a cabinet. Reseat everything; replace anything visibly damaged. Intermittent faults are very often mechanical.
- Note whether drops correlate with weather. Rain affecting a connection points at water ingress in outdoor cabling or a junction box — a real fault your provider should fix.
- Check for a pattern at the same time each day. Some providers do maintenance or line resynchronisation on a schedule. Worth asking about specifically.
- Log it before you call. Date, time, and duration of each drop for a few days. "It disconnects sometimes" gets you a script; "it dropped at 19:14, 20:47 and 22:03 on Tuesday and the modem lost sync each time" gets you an engineer.
If it's only one device
Everything else stays connected while one laptop or phone keeps falling off. Stop investigating the network.
- Update the Wi-Fi driver from the manufacturer's own support page, not Windows Update — which often carries an older version. This resolves a large share of single-device drops on Windows laptops.
- Forget the network and rejoin. A stale or badly negotiated profile causes exactly this.
- Check private/randomised MAC address settings. Both iOS and Android now randomise the hardware address they present, and can rotate it. If your router uses MAC filtering or a fixed-address reservation, the device appears as a stranger and gets refused. Turn off the private address for your home network specifically, or update the router's list.
- Check for a duplicate IP address. If someone has manually assigned a static IP inside the range your router hands out automatically, two devices eventually claim the same address and both suffer. Symptoms: two specific devices drop, seemingly in sympathy. Fix by using the router's reservation feature rather than setting statics on devices.
What the timing tells you

When the router itself is the problem
If a reboot reliably fixes it for a day or two and then it returns, the router is failing in one of two ordinary ways.
- Heat. Routers are passively cooled and are frequently stacked under a set-top box, wedged in a cabinet, or sitting in sun. A hot router becomes unstable. Give it clear air on all sides and see whether the pattern changes over a few days — this is free and fixes a surprising number of cases.
- Firmware. Check for an update in the admin interface. Manufacturers do ship stability fixes, and many routers never update themselves. If yours is more than about five years old and no longer receives updates, that's a security issue as much as a stability one.
Two things worth knowing before you buy anything: if your provider supplied the router, they will usually replace a faulty one at no cost — ask, with your logged drop times in hand. And if you replace it yourself, a mesh system solves coverage-related drops far more reliably than a single more expensive router.
During the next drop, try to load your router's admin page. It loads → the line is dropping, not your Wi-Fi; log the times and check the modem's sync light. It doesn't → the wireless link is dropping; split your 2.4 and 5 GHz networks, turn off adapter power saving on laptops, and if all your 5 GHz devices drop simultaneously for half an hour, move off the DFS channels.
