Pairing vs. connecting
Two devices pair once — they exchange keys and remember each other. After that they connect every time they come into range. Ask yourself:
- Does the device appear in your list of available devices at all? If not, it isn't in pairing mode, isn't powered, or is already connected elsewhere.
- Is it in your saved list but shows "Not Connected"? Then pairing already worked. The problem is the connection step — a different set of causes entirely.
Most people jump straight to "forget the device and pair again," which is the fix for the first case and pure wasted effort for the second.
The multipoint trap
This deserves its own section because it explains more headphone complaints than everything else combined.
Most modern headphones and earbuds support multipoint — staying connected to two devices at once, usually your phone and your laptop. The problem is that a Bluetooth audio device can generally only be actively playing to one source, and it doesn't announce which one it has chosen.
The classic scenario: your headphones "won't connect" to your phone. They are in fact perfectly connected — to the laptop in the next room, which you left open. Your phone sees them as unavailable, because they are.
How to check in five seconds: put the headphones on and see if they're already playing something, or check the Bluetooth settings on every other device you own. On the device that's holding them, disconnect (not forget). They'll then be available.
This is also why headphones "randomly" pause or switch mid-song: another paired device grabbed the audio channel. If it happens constantly, either turn off multipoint in the headphones' companion app, or turn Bluetooth off on the device you're not using.
If it won't pair at all
1. Make sure it's genuinely in pairing mode
Powering a device on is not the same as putting it into pairing mode. Almost every device needs a deliberate action — usually holding a button for 5–10 seconds until an LED flashes in a distinctly different pattern, often alternating two colours. A steady light usually means "on"; a rapid flash usually means "discoverable."
For earbuds, this is normally a press-and-hold on the case button with the buds inside and the lid open. Check the manual — the button timing varies enough between models that guessing rarely works.
2. Check it isn't already paired to something
Many devices won't enter pairing mode at all while connected to a previous device. See the multipoint section above.
3. Battery
A low battery is a genuinely common cause of "won't pair." Some devices power on and light up but have too little charge to sustain a radio connection. Charge for twenty minutes and retry before doing anything more complicated.
4. Delete the old pairing on both sides
If the device was previously paired and now won't reconnect, stale keys are likely. The important part: remove it from both devices. Forgetting the headphones on your phone while the headphones still remember the phone leaves a mismatch that causes exactly this symptom. On most headphones, a full reset (usually a longer button hold — check the manual) clears their side.
5. Too many paired devices
Bluetooth accessories have a limited pairing memory, often eight devices. Once full, the oldest entry is dropped or new pairings simply fail. If you've paired a set of earbuds to many devices over the years, resetting them clears the list.
If it pairs but keeps dropping
Connection quality problems, not pairing problems. Bluetooth uses the crowded 2.4 GHz band, and it is much more fragile than people expect.
- Your body is the main obstacle. Bluetooth is absorbed by water, and you are mostly water. Phone in your back pocket with earbuds in your ears means the signal goes through you. Moving the phone to a front pocket or a jacket often fixes stuttering completely.
- Distance is shorter than advertised. "10 metres" assumes clear line of sight. Through a wall, expect much less.
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi competes directly. If your router, microwave, and headphones are all crowding the same band, you get dropouts. Moving your Wi-Fi devices to 5 GHz frees up airspace — see our Wi-Fi guide for how.
- USB 3 ports emit interference. A known and well-documented effect: an unshielded USB 3 device or hub can flood the 2.4 GHz band. If your desktop's Bluetooth is unreliable and you have a USB 3 drive plugged in near the antenna, move it, or move the Bluetooth adapter to a front port or an extension cable.
- Power saving. On Windows, Device Manager → Bluetooth → your adapter → Properties → Power Management → uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." This resolves a surprising number of intermittent disconnections on laptops.
Audio problems: one earbud, lag, bad quality
Only one earbud works
Usually the two buds have lost sync with each other, not with the phone. The fix is a full reset: put both buds in the case, forget the device on your phone, then hold the case button until the LED indicates a reset (commonly 10–15 seconds, sometimes longer). Pair from scratch. If one bud still never wakes, check its charging contacts — earwax and pocket lint on the metal pins are a routine cause, and a dry cotton bud clears it.
Audio lags behind video
Bluetooth audio is always slightly delayed because it has to be encoded, transmitted, and decoded. Video apps compensate automatically; games and video calls generally can't. If lip-sync is off in a video app, close and reopen it so it re-measures the delay. For gaming, a low-latency codec or a wired connection is the only real answer — no setting eliminates it.
Sound is muffled or tinny, and the mic is bad
This is a profile problem, not a fault. Bluetooth headsets switch between a high-quality one-way audio profile and a low-quality two-way profile that enables the microphone. The moment any app opens the mic — a video call, a voice assistant, sometimes a browser tab with microphone permission — your audio quality collapses.
The fix is to stop something claiming the microphone. On a computer, check the sound settings for a duplicate "Hands-Free" or "Headset" entry for the same device and select the high-quality "Stereo" one instead. On a phone, close whatever app has mic access.
Car Bluetooth
Cars are the worst Bluetooth citizens, largely because their firmware was written years before your phone existed.
- Delete both sides. Remove the phone from the car's paired list and the car from the phone's. Half-deleted pairings are the single most common car Bluetooth fault.
- Mind the device limit. Many cars store only five phones, and silently refuse new ones when full. Clear out the old entries.
- Pair with the car stationary and in the right mode. Some systems refuse pairing while moving, and many need you to open the phone-pairing screen specifically rather than the general settings menu.
- Check for a head unit firmware update. Manufacturers do release these, and they routinely fix compatibility with newer phones. It's usually a download onto a USB stick.
- Contacts won't sync? That's a separate permission. On your phone's Bluetooth settings, tap the car's entry and check that contact sharing is enabled — it's often off by default.
On a Windows PC or Mac
- Windows: check the adapter is actually enabled. Some laptops have a hardware switch or a function key that disables the radio. Also check Device Manager for a Bluetooth entry with a warning icon — that means a driver problem, and the fix is the driver from your laptop manufacturer's support page rather than a generic one.
- Windows: remove the device from "Devices and printers" too. Devices sometimes linger there after being removed from Bluetooth settings, and the stale entry blocks re-pairing.
- Mac: reset the Bluetooth module. If nothing connects, restarting is the first step; if that fails, an SMC/NVRAM reset on Intel Macs, or simply a full shutdown (not just a restart) on Apple Silicon, clears a stuck controller.
- Both: unplug the USB 3 hub. See the interference note above. It's a real and frequently missed cause.
The last resort
If a phone genuinely cannot connect to anything over Bluetooth, reset the network settings — on iPhone, Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings; on Android, usually Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
This clears Bluetooth pairings, saved Wi-Fi networks and their passwords, and VPN settings. It doesn't touch photos, apps, or messages. Have your Wi-Fi passwords to hand before you do it, because you will be re-entering all of them.
Not in the list? It isn't in pairing mode, or it's already connected to another device — check your laptop. In the list but won't connect? Remove the pairing on both sides and start over. Connects then drops? Interference or body blocking — move the phone to a front pocket and move Wi-Fi to 5 GHz. Sound suddenly terrible? Something has claimed the microphone.
