The market itself
Seomun means west gate: the market grew up outside the western gate of Daegu's old walled town, which was pulled down in 1907. It dates to a periodic market of the late Joseon period, was counted among the three largest in the country in that dynasty's final years, and took its present form in 1920.
It is still enormous. The city's English guide gives a figure of more than 5,500 stores across nearly 35,000 square metres, and notes that the monorail station that serves it is the busiest on the line. The speciality is textiles — fabric, bedding, hanbok, tailoring — which is the base of Daegu's clothing industry. Most of the shops are inside large multi-storey buildings called districts (지구), with the food in the lanes between them and in the basements.
Eating there by day
Daytime food at Seomun is market workers' food: quick, cheap, eaten on a stool at a counter facing the cook.
- Knife-cut noodles. The market's signature. Rows of near-identical counters, each with a cook rolling and cutting dough to order. This is the home ground of nureun-guksu, the anchovy-broth noodle soup on the city's official list of ten dishes. Variants to know: kal-guksu (noodles), sujebi (hand-torn dough), and kal-jebi (both in one bowl).
- Flat dumplings. Napjak mandu, another of the ten, fried on a griddle and dressed with soy and scallion.
- Kimbap, fish cake and tteokbokki at the snack counters.
- Shaved ice and old-style sponge cake for afterwards.
Places that come up first in Naver Local for the market, by review count on 19 September 2026:
- 함지박 — knife-cut noodles and dumplings. 국채보상로 460-6. map
- 신서문김밥 — kimbap, in District 5. 큰장로26길 6. map
- 경희식당 서문시장점 — Korean meat dishes. 큰장로28길 25. map
- 제니 빙수 — shaved ice, in a basement arcade. 큰장로26길 25, B1. map
- 대구서문옛날카스테라 본점 — old-style castella sponge. 큰장로 120-11. map
At the noodle rows, do not agonise over which counter. They are close to interchangeable, and the usual method is to sit wherever there is a free stool.
The night market, and its 2026 hours
The night market is a separate operation run by the city, with licensed food carts along the market's main road. According to Daegu City's announcement for the 2026 season:
- It reopened on 27 March after a winter break of about three months.
- It runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only.
- Friday and Saturday: 19:00 to 23:30.
- Sunday: 19:00 to 22:30.
- The season runs to December. The city's second night market, at Chilseong, keeps the same hours and closes for the year in November.
The food is modern street food rather than market food — grilled skewers, stuffed and torched things, fusion snacks designed to be photographed — eaten standing up, with buskers and a craft market alongside. The city's own English itinerary for couples suggests it as the 7pm stop and mentions pork-belly kimbap among the carts.
From Monday to Thursday there is no night market, and the daytime market has shut by early evening. In rain, fewer carts turn out.
Getting there
- Metro: Seomun Market station on Line 3, the elevated monorail. The station is directly above the market's edge.
- From Banwoldang, the central interchange: one stop west on Line 2 to Cheongna Hill, then one stop on Line 3. On foot it is roughly a kilometre west along the main road.
- From the modern history walk: the market is a few minutes' walk north-west of Cheongna Hill, where Course 2 begins, so the two combine naturally — noodles first, then the walk.
Practicalities
- The daytime market takes rest days. Traditional markets in Korea commonly close on set Sundays each month. Check before planning a Sunday daytime visit; the night market's Sunday opening is separate.
- Go before one o'clock for the noodle counters, or after two. Between those times the stools are full of traders.
- Carry some cash. Cards and phone payments are widely accepted, but small counters prefer cash for small amounts.
- Sharing a bowl is not the custom at counters; one order per person is expected.
- It is a working market. Porters with handcarts have right of way and will not slow down.
Afterwards
Market food is a snack. For a proper meal afterwards, these three are east of the market, back towards the centre.
- Cheongwoo Haejang (한식당 청우해장) — Korean beef-broth restaurant at 남성로 11, in the Yangnyeongsi herbal-medicine alley beside the Museum of Oriental Medicine; five minutes on foot from Banwoldang station by its own directions. Daily 11:00–22:00, break 15:00–17:00, last order 21:00. cheongwoohaejang.com Roughly 800 metres east of the market in a straight line, going by Naver's coordinates — the nearest of the three, and on the way back to Banwoldang. Its own site lists Seomun Market among the places it can be walked to from.
- Restaurant Gasik, Banwoldang branch — 남성로 29-1, a standalone building about a minute on foot behind The Hyundai Daegu. It is not inside the department store. Opened 15 June 2026. 11:30–21:30, closed Mondays. gasik.kr (run by this site's owner)
- Restaurant Gasik (레스토랑 가식), Samdeok main branch — Western dining: steak, pasta, pizza. 달구벌대로445길 44-22, Samdeok-dong, Jung-gu. Daily 11:30–21:30, last order 21:00, no afternoon break. gasik.kr (run by this site's owner)
- Inedit-dam (삼덕동 이네딧담) — a bar, as Naver lists it, at 국채보상로150길 83 in Samdeok-dong, roughly 250 metres in a straight line from Gasik's main branch going by Naver's map coordinates. @inedit_dam on Instagram
How a night at the market fits with the city's other evening districts is in Daegu at night.
Menus, prices and opening hours are quoted from each restaurant's own website as read on 19 September 2026. They change, so check before you go.
By day, Seomun is a vast fabric market where the thing to eat is knife-cut noodles at a counter, with flat dumplings and kimbap on the side; go before one or after two. The night market is a separate event on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only — 19:00 to 23:30, closing at 22:30 on Sundays, from late March to December in 2026. Seomun Market station on the Line 3 monorail is right above it. On a weekday evening there is nothing to see.
