Two different problems, often confused
"My battery drains fast" describes two unrelated situations:
- High consumption. The battery is healthy, but something is using a lot of power — a bright screen, a broken app, a weak signal. Fixable in settings, usually in ten minutes.
- Reduced capacity. The battery has aged chemically and simply holds less charge than it did. No setting fixes this. After roughly two to three years of daily charging, a battery typically holds noticeably less than when new.
Telling them apart matters, because the fixes have nothing in common. A quick heuristic: if the change happened suddenly, over days, it is almost always consumption — an app updated, a setting changed, you moved somewhere with bad reception. If it declined gradually over a year or more, it is capacity.
Reading the battery screen
On iPhone
Open Settings → Battery. You'll see a chart and a list of apps with percentages. Two things to look at that people usually miss:
- Switch between Last 24 Hours and Last 10 Days. A single bad day is noise; a pattern across ten days is a cause.
- Below the app list, tap Show Activity. This splits each app's usage into time on screen and time in background. This is the single most useful number on the page.
An app that used 40% of your battery with 3 hours of screen time is not a problem — you used it for three hours. An app that used 25% with four minutes of screen time and six hours of background activity is the problem.
On Android
The path varies by manufacturer, but it's generally Settings → Battery, then a "Battery usage" or "View detailed usage" entry. Samsung phones put more detail under Settings → Battery and device care → Battery.
Look for the same split: foreground versus background usage. Android also lists system entries such as "Screen", "Mobile network standby", and "Android OS", which are often more informative than the app list — see the sections below.
These screens are only meaningful after a normal day of use. If you just restarted the phone or the log was recently cleared, percentages will be based on a tiny sample and will be misleading. Check after a full charge cycle of ordinary use.
If the screen is the top consumer
On most phones the display is the largest single draw, and that's normal. It becomes a problem when three things stack up.
Brightness
Automatic brightness is worth leaving on — it's better than manual for battery precisely because it dims when it can. What hurts is manually dragging brightness to maximum and leaving it there. Going from full brightness to around 50% is one of the largest single savings available on any phone, and after a few minutes your eyes will not notice.
Screen timeout
If the display stays on for five minutes after you stop touching it, you are lighting up a screen for nobody several dozen times a day. Set it to 30 seconds or one minute. This is a small change that compounds heavily.
Always-on display and high refresh rate
An always-on clock costs power all day. A 120 Hz refresh rate looks lovely and costs more than 60 Hz. Most phones have an "adaptive" refresh mode that drops the rate on static content — use it rather than forcing the maximum. If you're trying to stretch a day, turning off always-on display is the bigger of the two wins.
Dark mode — only sometimes
On OLED screens, black pixels are switched off, so dark mode genuinely saves power — most noticeably at high brightness. On older LCD screens, the backlight is on regardless and dark mode saves essentially nothing. Check which panel your phone has before assuming.
If one app is the top consumer
You've found an app with high background usage and low screen time. Work through these in order.
1. Update it, then restart the phone
A large share of sudden battery problems are a bug in one app version, fixed in the next. Check for an update before changing any settings. Restart afterwards — a stuck background process survives an app update but not a reboot.
2. Cut its background permissions
Three permissions account for most background drain:
- Location. Set it to "While Using the App" rather than "Always" for everything except navigation and genuinely location-based tools. An app checking your position continuously in the background is expensive.
- Background refresh / background data. On iPhone, Settings → General → Background App Refresh. On Android, the per-app battery setting usually offers "Restricted" or "Optimised". Restrict anything that doesn't need to update while closed — most social and shopping apps don't.
- Notifications from chatty apps. Each push wakes the screen and the radio. Turning off marketing notifications is both a battery saving and a quality-of-life improvement.
3. If it's still bad, use the website
For social networks and shopping in particular, the mobile website in your browser does most of what the app does without any background presence at all. Removing one badly behaved app is often worth more than every other tweak combined.
If nothing obvious is listed
Sometimes the list is unremarkable and the battery still empties. Three usual suspects:
Weak mobile signal
This is the most underrated battery drain there is. When signal is poor, the radio raises its transmit power and retries constantly — a phone showing one bar in a basement office is working far harder than one showing four bars. Android often names this directly as "Mobile network standby" high in the list.
What to do: in a known dead zone, turn on Wi-Fi calling if your carrier supports it, or switch to airplane mode with Wi-Fi on. If you're travelling with no usable coverage, airplane mode will roughly transform your battery life.
Heat
Lithium-ion batteries lose charge faster when hot, and repeated heat permanently reduces capacity. A phone left on a car dashboard, charging under a pillow, or running navigation in direct sun on a windscreen mount will drain fast and age faster. If your phone is hot to the touch regularly, that's worth fixing on its own — take the case off while fast-charging and keep it out of the sun.
A sync loop
An email account with wrong credentials, a photo backup that keeps failing and restarting, or a cloud folder stuck on one corrupt file can retry endlessly. Symptoms: the phone is warm while idle and the battery falls overnight with the screen off. Check that every account in your settings shows as connected, and look at whether your photo backup has been "uploading 1 of 4,312" for three days.
Checking battery health
If consumption looks normal but you only get half the day you used to, check capacity.
- iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. "Maximum Capacity" is the percentage of the original capacity remaining. Apple considers a battery consumed when it drops below 80% of original capacity after a stated number of cycles. Below 80%, a replacement makes a very obvious difference.
- Android: varies. Samsung reports battery status under Settings → Battery and device care → Diagnostics. Recent Android and Pixel builds expose battery health information in the battery settings. Otherwise, a rough test: note the percentage drop over an hour of steady video playback and compare it to what the phone did when new.
A battery replacement at an authorised service centre is usually far cheaper than a new phone and restores the device completely. It's the single best value repair in consumer tech.
Slowing future decline
Battery ageing is driven by heat, by full charge cycles, and by time spent sitting at 100%. Practical habits that help:
- Turn on optimised charging (iPhone) or adaptive/protect battery (Android). These hold at 80% overnight and finish just before you wake.
- If your phone offers an 80% charging limit and you rarely need a full day of runtime, use it.
- Avoid leaving the phone plugged in in a hot car or on a heated surface.
- Occasional fast charging is fine; fast charging a hot phone repeatedly is what causes harm.
Five tips that do nothing
- Swiping apps closed to save battery. On iOS this is counterproductive — suspended apps use no CPU, and relaunching one from scratch costs more power than resuming it. On Android the system already manages this. Force-close an app because it is misbehaving, not as routine maintenance.
- "Battery saver" apps from the store. They cannot do anything the operating system doesn't already do, they run constantly to display their own interface, and many are ad-supported. The built-in low-power mode is the real version of this feature.
- Fully draining the battery to "recalibrate" it. This was advice for nickel-based batteries decades ago. Deep discharges are mildly harmful to lithium-ion cells.
- Turning Bluetooth off. Modern Bluetooth Low Energy uses a negligible amount of power. Turning it off to save battery costs you your watch and headphones for no meaningful gain.
- Charging only with the original charger. Any certified charger is fine. What matters is that it's a reputable one that negotiates properly — not that it came in the box.
Open your battery settings and turn on the foreground/background split. If the screen is top, cut brightness and timeout. If an app is top with high background time, update it, then restrict its location and background refresh. If nothing stands out, suspect weak signal or heat. If consumption looks fine but runtime is halved, check maximum capacity — you probably need a new battery, not new settings.
